How a Business Card Can Spark Conversation & Connection

When I started my business last fall, I knew I’d need business cards for networking and since I love to craft, I decided to make them. I kept them simple, but the response I’ve received from them has been pretty incredible! In fact, they directly led to the project I’m about to tell you about…

Designing Business Cards for The Community Classroom in Florence, MA

I met Megan Allen last fall at Coffee & Conversations, a monthly networking event at The Sphere in Northampton. She’s one of the co-founders of The Sphere (an incredible resource supporting women & nonbinary entrepreneurs in Western Massachusetts) AND she’s the founder of The Community Classroom (a space that offers tutoring, academic coaching, and parent support locally and virtually). Megan is a former school teacher and has all of the best qualities of a favorite teacher. She’s positive, supportive, and kind. After meeting her once, you’ll know she’s someone who gets things done.

When Megan asked if I could help design new business cards for The Community Classroom, I was over the moon. These weren’t going to be just any business card. They were designed to start conversations, spark smiles, and create connections, a mini experience in someone’s hand.

At our first meeting, we talked through her business offerings, including academic tutoring, summer camps, and math and science workshops. We discussed the audience she usually gives cards to, where she hands them out, and how many she printed last time. Megan also shared the meaning behind her logo, a pineapple symbolizing southern hospitality and open doors for every student.

I drafted a couple of prototypes and shared them with her. She chose one, and I continued refining the design. Once the final proofs were approved, I sent them off to the printer. The finished product was a pair of vertical business cards bound together like a mini book, with an insert that included an activity. It was interactive, memorable, and playful, exactly the kind of handmade marketing that gets people talking.

Working with Megan was a joy. She made the process smooth and fun, and I’m grateful for the chance to bring creativity into something as everyday as a business card. This project reminded me how even small, thoughtful details can leave a lasting impression and inspire conversation.
